As the name of implies breed, these dogs were taken in the mountainous part of Scotland. The word “terrier” immediately determines the appearance of dog: small size, high set tail vigorous, robust constitution, excellent health and wonderful temperament. It was necessary for survival in the harsh climate of the Highlands of Scotland.
There are several versions of the origin of West Highland. But most likely (and agree with this, many experts who have studied the history of rock), rock was obtained by crossing Scottish terrier (or, as he was called before the Aberdeen Terrier), and Cairn terrier.
According to another theory, the West Highland and Cairn terriers in general were one breed, and the allocation of “lead” to a separate breed was the result of selection by color. One of the first breeders have received a white terrier, was Colonel Donald Malcolm of the estate Poltalloh, county Argaylshir.
Stimulus for breeding dogs in white was an accident that occurred on the hunt when he shot his red terrier taking him for a fox. Since then, Colonel Malcolm decided to leave in the litter only white puppies and use them in future breeding. Very soon all the neighbors (an avid hunter) evaluated the advantages of lighter colored hunting dogs. With the spread of white terriers, they have all sorts of names – mostly of titles estates where bred dogs of this breed
The name “West Highland White Terrier” appeared in the early twentieth century when the breed was recognized by the Scottish Kennel Club. This happened in 1904. In 1905, Malcolm has registered club West Highland White – Terriers and became its chairman, and in 1907 English Kennel Club also admitted to a rock. And in the same year the first representatives of white terriers were recorded as exhibitors at the largest exhibition in England Crafts as “West Highland White Terrier.” It stands out compared to other terriers, has captivated audiences mischievous expression of their white muzzles. This energetic, pretty, perky dog immediately gained many fans.
SIZE
Adult dog up to 25-30 cm at the withers, weighs 10.6 kg. Wool is soft and hypoallergenic.
COLOUR
White, rarely black.
CHARACTER
The nature is cheerful, sociable and playful disposition, but also wayward as all terriers. It loves children. It is easy to teach and bark to strangers.
CARE
It requires combing and bathing once every 2-3 weeks, trimming every 3-4 months.
